Converting Extension Springs to Torsion: Is It Worth It?
Extension springs work, and torsion systems are safer, quieter and last longer. Here's what a conversion involves and when it makes sense.

Older and lighter doors frequently use extension springs — the long springs running along the horizontal tracks that stretch as the door closes. They work. A torsion system, mounted on a shaft above the opening, works better in several measurable ways.
The differences that matter
Safety in failure. This is the big one. When an extension spring breaks under tension, the spring and its hardware can travel across the garage with real force. A torsion spring breaking stays contained on its shaft. Extension springs should always have containment cables running through them for exactly this reason — if yours don't, that's worth fixing today regardless of whether you convert.
Balance and control. Torsion systems apply lift more evenly and hold the door better through its travel. Doors on torsion springs are less prone to the bouncing and swaying that extension systems can produce.
Longevity. Torsion springs generally last longer, and higher-cycle springs are readily available if you want more.
Noise. Extension springs and their pulleys make more noise.
Space. Extension systems occupy the area alongside the horizontal tracks. Torsion frees that up.
What a conversion involves
It's more than swapping a part.
A torsion shaft, bearing plates and center bracket get mounted above the opening, which requires adequate header structure to carry the load.
Cable drums go on each end of the shaft, and the lifting cables get rerouted from the bottom brackets up to the drums.
Springs sized for the door's actual weight get installed and wound. Sizing is calculated from door weight, height and drum size, so the door usually gets weighed rather than estimated.
The old extension springs, pulleys, and their hardware come out.
Headroom has to be adequate. The shaft and springs need clearance above the opening. In a low-headroom garage this is the constraint that decides whether a conversion is possible.
When it makes sense
- The door is due for springs anyway. If you're paying for spring work regardless, the incremental cost of converting is the more sensible spend.
- You're replacing the door. New doors are typically torsion, and this is the natural moment.
- The existing extension springs have no containment cables and you want to fix the safety issue properly.
- The door is heavier than the extension system is comfortable with — a common situation on doors that have been upgraded to insulated sections.
- Noise matters, particularly with living space over the garage.
When it doesn't
- Headroom won't allow it without a low-headroom conversion kit that adds complexity and cost
- The door itself is near end of life — spend the money on a new door instead
- The header isn't adequate to carry a torsion shaft without structural work
- A light single door with sound extension springs and proper containment cables — it works, and the money may be better spent elsewhere
The minimum, if you're not converting
If you're staying with extension springs, do two things:
Confirm containment cables are installed and intact running through each spring, anchored properly at both ends. This is inexpensive and it's the difference between a broken spring being an inconvenience and being a hazard.
Replace both springs together when one goes. The other is the same age with the same cycle count, and an unbalanced pair puts the door out of level.
Either way, don't DIY it
Both systems store serious energy. Extension springs are under tension whenever the door is down. Torsion springs are under tension whenever they're wound. Neither is a homeowner repair, and the parts being cheap and available online is exactly why people get hurt.
