Abingdon is about an hour up I-81 from our Chuckey shop and it is a regular part of our Southwest Virginia route. It is also one of the more interesting markets we work in, because the housing splits so cleanly into two kinds of job.

The historic district

Abingdon has one of the best-preserved historic districts in Southwest Virginia, and homeowners there generally do not want a plain flush steel panel on the front of the house. Carriage-house styling in insulated steel gives you the look of a swing-out wooden door with none of the maintenance, and modern versions are convincing enough at street level that most people cannot tell.

What matters when choosing one:

  • Panel profile and overlay. This is what makes it read as carriage rather than as a stamped imitation.
  • Hardware. Decorative handles and strap hinges finish the look and cost very little.
  • Window options. Glazing in the top section changes the whole face of the door, and it also puts daylight into a garage that usually has none.
  • Color against the actual house. We bring samples to the property. Judging a color off a screen is how people end up disappointed.

Outside the historic core

The newer subdivisions off Exit 17 and toward Meadowview are conventional sectional doors, and the calls there are the standard ones — a broken torsion spring, a snapped cable, worn rollers, or an opener that has stopped responding.

Insulation is worth more here than people think

Southwest Virginia winters are colder than most of our Tennessee service area, and an attached garage that shares a wall with living space leaks a great deal of heat through an uninsulated door. An insulated door is also stiffer, which matters for how it holds up over years of cycling.
