When to Get a Second Opinion on a Garage Door Quote

Most of the people in this trade are honest. Some are not, and the pattern is consistent enough to be worth naming.

The recommendations worth checking

"You need a whole new door." Sometimes true. Frequently not. A broken spring, a bent section, a failed opener and a dented panel are all individually repairable. The genuine case for replacement is when several systems are at end of life at once, or when rust has gone through the steel. Ask which specific parts have failed and why repair is not viable — and ask them to show you.

"The springs are fine" on a door you cannot lift by hand. Disconnect the opener and try it yourself. If it will not stay at waist height, the springs are not fine.

"You need a new opener" when the fault has not been demonstrated. Openers fail, but so do photo-eye sensors, wall buttons, limit settings, remotes and logic boards — and most of those are cheaper. Ask what test showed the motor or board is the fault.

A price that will not be broken down. Parts and labor, itemised, in writing.

Pressure to decide immediately. A garage door is rarely an emergency in the sense that requires a same-hour decision, and urgency is the oldest sales technique there is.

The red flags

• No written quote.
• Cash only, or full payment before work.
• No licence or insurance details, and reluctance to provide them.
• Unmarked vehicles and no verifiable local address.
• A price quoted before anyone looked at the door.
• Refusal to show you the failed part.

What a straight assessment looks like

Somebody looks at the door, tests the balance with the opener disconnected, inspects springs, cables, drums, rollers, track and opener, tells you what has failed and what has not, and gives you a written flat-rate quote before starting. If the answer is that it needs replacing, they can show you why.
