Struts and Reinforcement: Why Wide Doors Bow and Bend
A double door that's sagging in the middle or bending at the top section usually needs reinforcement, not replacement.

If you have a double-wide door and the top section is bowing, or the door looks like it's sagging in the middle when it's up, the problem is usually rigidity rather than a failing component. Struts are the fix.
What a strut is
A strut is a horizontal reinforcing brace that runs across the width of a door section, usually a formed steel U-channel bolted to the section. Its job is to keep that section straight under load.
Wide doors need them because a single-layer steel panel spanning sixteen feet has very little inherent stiffness. When the opener pulls up on the center of the top section, that section wants to flex, and over thousands of cycles that flex becomes a permanent bow.
Where doors bend
The top section takes the most abuse on an opener-equipped door, because the opener arm connects there and applies all its lifting force at a single point. A top section without adequate reinforcement bows upward in the middle, and once it's bent the door stops sealing at the top and the rollers start binding.
The bottom section carries the door's weight through the bottom brackets and cables. A bowed bottom section leaves a gap under the door in the middle.
Middle sections flex on very wide doors, especially non-insulated ones.
Why insulated doors bow less
Three-layer sandwich construction — steel, insulation, steel — is dramatically more rigid than a single sheet of steel. Two-layer doors sit in between.
This is one of the practical advantages of insulated doors that doesn't get mentioned much alongside the energy discussion. On a wide door, the structural difference is real and it shows up as a door that stays straight over years.
Signs you need reinforcement
- A visible bow or wave in a section when you look along the door
- A gap at the top of the door when it's closed, wider in the middle
- A gap under the door in the middle while the corners touch the floor
- The opener arm area showing stress marks or the section flexing visibly during operation
- Rollers binding near the center
- The door not sealing evenly across its width
What we do about it
Add struts to the affected sections. On a wide door that never had adequate reinforcement, this is the standard fix and it's straightforward — the strut bolts across the section and takes the flex out.
Add a strut to the top section specifically if the opener is connected there without one. Some manufacturers require this and some installers skip it, and it's a common cause of premature top-section damage.
Reinforce the opener connection point with a proper reinforcement bracket, which spreads the opener's load across the section rather than concentrating it at a few bolts.
Replace the section if it's already bent badly enough that it can't be straightened. Sections are replaceable individually, which is much cheaper than a whole door.
The related cause: an out-of-balance door
A door whose springs have weakened puts far more load on the opener, which means far more force applied at that single connection point on the top section. So a bowing top section is often a symptom of a spring problem rather than an independent issue.
We check balance whenever we see a bowed section, because reinforcing the section without fixing the underlying spring issue means it'll bend again.
When it's cheaper to replace the door
If multiple sections are bowed, if there's rust involved, if the door is old and other components are near end of life, the arithmetic starts favoring a new door. We'll tell you where the line is rather than selling reinforcement on a door that isn't worth it.
For a door that's otherwise sound with one bowed section, reinforcement or section replacement is dramatically cheaper than a full door.
