A door that reverses right as it touches down has a short list of causes. Here they are in the order worth checking.

The door comes down, touches the floor, and immediately runs back up. It's one of the most common calls we get, and it's usually one of a handful of things you can work through in order.

Important framing first: the door is reversing because a safety system told it to. That system is working. The fix is finding out what it's reacting to, not defeating it.

1. The safety sensors

Start here, because it's the most common cause and the cheapest fix.

The photo eyes near the floor project a beam across the opening. Anything breaking that beam while the door closes makes it reverse.

Check:

  • Lens cleanliness. Dust, cobwebs and grime block the beam. Wipe both.
  • Alignment. They must point at each other. A bump from a bike, a broom or a stored item is enough. Most have an indicator light that goes steady when aligned and blinks or goes out when not.
  • Obstructions. A trash can, a stored item, tall grass or debris in the beam path.
  • Wiring. Look for damaged or pinched wire between the sensors and the opener. Staples through the wire are a classic.
  • Sun. Low direct sunlight hitting a sensor can wash out the beam. This is a real phenomenon and it produces a door that only misbehaves at certain times of day.

2. The close limit setting

If the sensors check out, the next suspect is the travel limit.

The close limit tells the opener where the floor is. If it's set too far, the opener keeps driving after the door has landed, the opener senses the resistance of the floor, and reverses.

The tell: the door touches down and reverses immediately, and you may hear the opener strain in that last moment.

3. Force settings too sensitive

Force determines how much resistance triggers a reversal. Set too low, ordinary friction is enough.

This gets worse in cold weather when everything is stiffer, which is why we get a run of these calls in January in Greene County.

The right answer is not simply cranking the force up. Force set too high defeats the contact reversal safety, and it also masks the mechanical problem that's causing the extra resistance.

4. Something physical in the way

Check the floor across the full width of the opening — a bit of gravel, a small object, ice, or a bump in the concrete.

Also check the bottom seal. A seal that's torn, folded under, or has debris packed into it can create resistance right at touchdown.

5. Track binding or worn rollers

If the door binds at a specific point, the opener reads that as an obstruction.

Look for a dented or misaligned track section, rollers that don't spin freely, dry hinges and bearings, or a track that's shifted because mounting hardware worked loose.

The signature here: the reversal happens at the same physical point in the travel every time, not necessarily at the floor.

6. Spring balance

The underlying cause behind a lot of force-related reversals. If the springs have weakened, the opener is carrying weight it wasn't designed to carry, and it hits its force threshold during normal operation.

Test it: disconnect the opener with the emergency release and lift the door by hand. It should lift with moderate effort and stay put around halfway. If it fights you or drops, the springs need attention — and no amount of opener adjustment fixes that.

Springs are a technician job.

The thing not to do

Do not increase the force setting until it closes. That's the instinct and it's the wrong move. You'd be disabling the protection that stops the door crushing something, and you'd be leaving a mechanical problem in place to get worse.

Working order

  1. Clean and align the sensors
  2. Check for obstructions and the bottom seal
  3. Check the close limit
  4. Check for track binding or worn rollers
  5. Test spring balance
  6. Adjust force only after the above are ruled out
