Choosing an Opener for a Heavy or Oversized Door
Horsepower ratings are only part of it. What actually determines whether an opener will last on a big door.

A double-wide insulated steel door weighs a great deal more than a single-car single-skin one, and putting the wrong opener on it is a reliable way to buy two openers.
The thing to understand first
The opener does not lift the door. The springs do. A correctly counterbalanced door is nearly weightless at the opener — it only has to overcome friction and get the mass moving.
Which means the single most important factor in opener longevity is not the opener. It is whether the springs are correctly sized and maintained. An undersized or worn spring makes the opener carry weight it was never designed for, and that is what kills openers early.
So: fix the balance first, then choose the opener.
What actually matters in the opener
Rated door size and weight, not horsepower marketing. Manufacturers state a maximum door size and weight for each unit — use that.
Drive type:
- Chain — durable, cheapest, loudest.
- Belt — much quieter, well suited to a bedroom above the garage, slightly more expensive.
- Screw — fewer moving parts, handles heavy doors well, moderate noise.
- Jackshaft (wall mount) — drives the torsion tube directly, no ceiling unit, excellent for heavy and oversized doors and for high-lift track. Depends completely on correct spring balance.
Rail length. Standard rails suit doors up to 7 feet. A taller door needs an extension kit, and it must be the right one for the unit.
DC versus AC motors. DC units are generally quieter, start and stop more smoothly, and commonly support battery backup.
Two openers on one door
On very wide commercial-style doors, occasionally the right answer. It needs to be done deliberately with synchronised operation rather than improvised.
